Artwork by Nova Lamela
Through art I use my own experiences and express these events through visual documentation. My art is a biographical journal and creative journey of emotions, dreams and fears. I wield these entries into narrative stories on canvas. As an artist I think it’s important to understand the subject matter that an artist is creating as well as undergoing.

The majority of my work is developed using oil on stretched canvas. I find oil being both challenging and most fitting for the work that I do. My process of creation begins with brainstorming ideas followed by a series of thumbnails, sketches and photographs and lastly ending with the final painting. It’s important to note that it’s not all about the technical aspect of this entire process but the creative/emotional element must be there throughout each step of the way.

Each person has a story to tell. Their life experiences as well as their dreams and fears are enough to create chapters within that story. At the present the majority of my work is an autobiography of certain events in my life. The series “Go to Sleep” takes a small portion but important event in my life and brought onto canvas. By using myself as a subject and recreating an emotional aspect of my life I become part of my own artwork by writing a story through the form of visual documentation. The painting “The Sanctuary” is a reenactment of fear that occurred during this particular segment of my life. I always felt that journaling is not only a helpful tool to process memories but it’s also therapeutic. My intention is to use this form of visual journaling to tell my own story along with expressing and releasing emotions to finalize the past, move forward and make room for what lies ahead. These emotions are an important factor in a person’s life and interesting enough to be the main subject matter in which I create my art.
